What In the World Is CBCT?
How cool would it be if you went into the dentist and you saw more than just the humdrum, ordinary tools present in every dental office? What if you saw something that looked like it was from the future? Lucky for our patients, we have something from the future. Well, it’s not from the future, since it’s at the office right now. But it’s technology that you might think came from the future.
The Dentist’s Super Power
Our futuristic device is called a CBCT or the Cone Beam Computed Tomography. Long name, right? So we’ll just call it the CBCT from now on. This device lets us take completely 3-D images of your craniofacial area. In laymen’s terms, that means the face, mouth, jaw, and head region. X-rays are pretty cool, because your dentist can see your through skin and muscles to the bones and teeth. Kind of like Superman’s x-ray vision. The CBCT goes beyond that though with a 3-D image of your mouth. It would be like looking at your skull. The dentist really does have x-ray vision. Pretty cool, right?
You may be asking, “Okay. That’s pretty cool, but what’s the purpose? How is that any better than a normal x-ray?”
Benefits of the CBCT
Well, that’s a great hypothetical question, reader. The futuristic device gives the dentist the super power to diagnose abnormalities, assess the placement of dental implants, create more accurate treatment planning, among many other valuable uses. There are also amazing benefits to you as the patient. The CBCT scan is non-invasive. It uses less radiation, and you get better treatment. That’s why it’s better than a normal x-ray.
Watch It in Action
Don’t take my word for it, though. Watch this video to see how cool it is!
