Meet the Staff: Kelli

Get to Know Staff Member Kelli

You probably best know Kelli by the work she does on your teeth during your regular dental checkups. For the sixth installment of the “Meet the Staff” series, we interview our dental hygienist, Kelli. We ask her a few questions about her job at Randall K. McVey, DMD PA and about things she does outside of work.

How long have you been working in dentistry?

I’ve been a hygienist for 10 years.

What inspired you to pursue your career?

When I was little, my favorite book was Teeth. I loved it so much that I knew if I scribbled in it, my Mom would have to buy it from the library. I still own that book today. When I was a freshman in High School, Colby Community College started their dental hygiene program. There was no doubt in my mind that that’s what I wanted to do.

What is your favorite part about your job?

I love that my patients and co-workers have become like family to me.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy running, shopping and spending time with my son Westyn.

How would you describe your fashion sense?

I would like to think I have a great fashion sense, but honestly, it’s best described as scrubs and mom life!

Thanks for reading and getting to know Kelli a little a bit better. We all look forward to seeing you in the office again. Until next time, here’s to your health!

Why good deeds are the best way to pay it forward

Good Deeds to Pay It Forward: Since Thanksgiving was just this past week, we’ve all been feeling pretty thankful for family, friends, our homes, and so much more. And when we have everything that we need, the best way to show God how grateful we are for all his blessings is by paying it forward.

Meet the Staff: Anna

Meet the Staff: Anna

For the sixth installment of the Meet the Staff” series, we interview our webmaster, Anna.

1) How long have you been working for Dr. McVey?

I have been working at Dr. McVey’s office since December of 2016.

2) What inspired you to pursue your career?

I grew up around dentistry. Fun fact: Dr. McVey is my dad. So, I’ve been around the industry as far back as I can remember. I’ve always been comfortable around dentistry, but I wanted to have a more creative career. When I decided to move back to Garden City, my parents gave me the opportunity to manage their website, social media, and some marketing. I was on board; it combined the world of dentistry and creativity. I just thought that was perfect. I’ve been blessed to have such a great opportunity to have this as a job.

3) What is your favorite part about your job?

My absolute favorite part of my job is telling the office’s story. That includes writing and managing blog posts, sharing patients’ reviews, showing our office personality via social media, etc. It’s fun!

4) What are some of your hobbies?

I really enjoy volunteering with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. (Cystic fibrosis is a disease that affects the respiratory and digestive systems.) Prior to moving back home, I had an internship with their chapter in Denver, Colorado. Since then, I’ve been able to volunteer my time as part of the planning teams for some of their conferences for adults with cystic fibrosis.

I also like to have movie nights with my kids. Eating pizza and soda and finding a fun movie to watch is just one of the best ways to bond with them. I also love to frequent Patrick Dugan’s. You might even see me working there from time-to-time working on a blog post or updating the website.

5) Do you prefer happy or scary movies?

I enjoy both happy and scary movies, but if I had to choose, it would be scary movies. While I don’t claim to be an aficionado of horror, some horror movies are in my top ten list of the best cinema. Some of my favorites include Get Out, The Babadook, and Rosemary’s Baby. I like the thrill that I get from watching them. I would say it’s similar to the feeling you might get from riding a roller coaster without the danger of being tossed from the ride. It’s a safer way to get the thrill I want, because if it gets too intense, I can always turn it off and come back when I’ve calmed down. You can’t do that on a roller coaster.

What We’re Thankful for in 2017

What We’re Thankful for in 2017

Thanksgiving is approaching fast…

so we thought that some of us from Dr. McVey’s office would write about the things that we’re thankful for this year.

Emilia-Dental Assistant

2017 has definitely been one of my most challenging years. With the loss of my mother last fall, I experienced a lot of heartache. My husband having a serious medical condition and not knowing what the outcome was going to be, had me a little crazy at times. I would have to say through all of that I have witnessed some beautiful things. Some of my friends and family members came together to help in any way that they could and with their support we got through it all. So I would have to say I am very thankful for my family and friends. I carry a special love for them in my heart always!

Becky-Office Manager

This special group of people is what I am most thankful for. My husband, Dr. McVey, has been the love of my life for over 36 years. My four children and two grandchildren are such a blessing and joy. I am also thankful for my extended family and friends. I am very grateful for all the material blessings that I enjoy, such as a warm home and garage when the cold weather hits, and for air conditioning when it is not. I am thankful for a wonderful place to work, with a great team, and for our patients. I am thankful to live in the USA where we have freedom of worship and all the other freedoms that we take for granted.

This Thanksgiving, I am very thankful to God for how He has provided for me through the good times, and comforted me in the hard times.

Emily-Dental Hygienist

This past year gives me so much to be thankful for.  On April 30th, my husband was working with his crew to restore power when he suffered a broken pelvis from a fall.  I am forever grateful for the nurses, doctors, and surgeons who took such good care of him.  I am forever grateful for our family, our friends, and our line family who stepped in to do anything they possibly could to help us.  Most of all, I am incredibly thankful to have my husband, and to have him healed and healthy.  God’s grace is sufficient, and He is so, so good.  And I am thankful for my dog and cat too!

Kelli-Dental Hygienist

I have a lot to be thankful for this year. I have truly been blessed with great family , friend , church family and my job. At the top of my list of course is this little guy! I thank God everyday for allowing me to be Westyn’s Momma!

Dr. McVey

One of my favorite all-time holiday movies is “White Christmas” with Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, and Danny Kaye. Irving Berlin wrote the wonderful music for this movie. The lyrics to one of the songs  Bing sings to Rosemary Clooney go something like this:

When you’re worried and cannot sleep, count your blessings instead of sheep and you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings.

What a beautiful and touching moment that is, and what a great way to live our lives.

When I count my blessings over the past year I have so much for which to be grateful. I have a beautiful and loving wife. I have three lovely daughters that are making their way in the world, my son is embarking on his college career. I’m very proud of my children. I have two grandkids who are the very joy of my life. I get to come to work every day surrounded by a great staff that I tremendously appreciate and enjoy. I am grateful for my patients who allow me to be a part of their lives. I am thankful for all the opportunities I have to learn more about myself, my patients, and my profession. I am grateful for the opportunity I had this summer to travel with my wife and son through Europe, visiting landmarks I had only read about before (and we got to sing in many of those places as well). I am blessed with many, many good friends. All in all, I am a very fortunate guy. If I followed Bings advice and counted all my blessings, I might never get to sleep because it would take me all night to count every one of those blessings!

Anna-Business Assistant

My health has been worsening over the past five years, and I’ve had to make many changes out of necessity, It is quite humbling to have to move back home at 31-years-old. But when you’re health is declining due to a complicated and life-threatening disease (cystic fibrosis) and you’re a single mom to two young children, you have few options available to you. Just in case you didn’t know, Dr. McVey and Becky are my parents. They help out with my kiddos when I’m not feeling well, provided me with a job and a place to live. I am very thankful for them.

This past year, I’ve been in the hospital twice. Each hospital stay lasted for about two weeks. I was even in the hospital on my birthday for the very first time. But my parents, kids, and friends surprised me with a spontaneous birthday. While the hospital is one of the last places you usually want to celebrate a birthday, I can honestly say it was one of my best birthdays. My community made an otherwise dreary experience an amazing day. There’s alot to complain about when it comes to how cystic fibrosis has robbed from me. Yet it’s also because of my health problems that the truest friends and loved ones have rallied around me in my darkest times. My community is what helps keep my spirits elevated, and that is what I am most thankful for this year.

I have been working in dentistry for 29 years.

My husband, Dr. McVey, had been a dental associate with Dr. Wheat in Lakin, Kansas. When he bought a practice in Garden City, I started my dental career on the administrative side.

By training, I am a teacher with my Masters in Education. I really enjoy the patient education aspect of my job when I discuss the Review of Findings with our patients. I love to read good novels, especially history, fantasy, and science fiction. I really enjoy traveling and visiting places.

5) If you had to choose between cats and dogs, which would you choose and why?

Meet the Staff: Dr. McVey

Meet the Staff: Dr. McVey

For the third installment of the “Meet the Staff” series, we interview Dr. McVey.

1) How long have you been working as a dentist?

I graduated from dental school at Oral Roberts University in 1983. So that means I’ve been working as a dentist for 34 years…and I still love it!

2) What inspired you to pursue your career?

Well, when I was a kid I thought the dentist had the best toys. Still kind of feel that way. In college, I wanted a caring career that was people focused and that would allow time for family. The more I explored possible careers, the more dentistry seemed like the best fit.

3) What is your favorite part about your job?

The people! I love that I see my patients on a regular basis and get to know them and their families. I love working with awesome staff members that care about our patients and make coming to work a pleasure. I love the opportunity to have a very positive impact on a patient’s life whether it’s more self-confidence or comfort or improved overall health.

4) What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy singing, playing guitar and piano, and riding my motorcycle. I love spending time with my family and friends. In fact, the sweetest thing in life is being a Papi–that’s what my grandkids call me!

5) How would you describe your fashion sense?

I’d probably have to describe my fashion sense as “geezer nerd”. My primary question when shopping for clothes? “Is it comfortable?”
